MANILA -- A new fault system could have caused the massive earthquake that hit Bohol and nearby provinces on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. "We are now entertaining the idea that a new fault system is actually responsible for this earthquake," Dr. Ismael Narag of the Phivolcs said in a press briefing on Friday. Officials earlier said the magnitude 7.2 quake was triggered by the East Bohol fault. Narag said a team from Phivolcs has been sent to Bohol to study their new theory. Narag also noted that the epicenter of the quake, which was earlier believed to be Carmen town, has been placed between Sagbayan and Catigbian towns. The Phivolcs pointed out that the damage in Sagbayan town seems more extensive compared to Carmen. ANC, October 18, 2013
