India revokes Kashmir’s long-held special status, raising opposition from Pakistan and China

India announced on August 5, 2019, that it would revoke the special autonomy status of Indian-administered Kashmir. The region had enjoyed the special status for the past 70 years.  The move sparked protests in Pakistan, and China has said the change is unacceptable and it is urging New Delhi to abide by bilateral agreements in order to avoid complicating issues along their shared border.
