1 In Hinduism, Shakuntala (written as Sakuntala) was the wife of Dushyanta and the mother of Emperor Bharata.
2 Her story is retold in many scriptures and dramatised by many writers.
3 She was said to have been the daughter of the famous Apsara called Menaka.
4 It is said that Shakuntala was left after her birth at Sage Kanva’s hermit by Menka.
5 The most famous adaption of her story is Kalidasa's Sanskrit drama called Abhijnanasakuntala (The Recognition of Shakuntala).
6 Abhijnanashakuntalam, also called Shakuntal, is considered as a great saga of forgotten love between Shakuntala and the King Dushyanta.
7 Shakuntala was cursed by a powerful rishi called Durvasa Rishi for not greeting him properly, after which she parted from her lover.
8 Shakuntala and Dushyanta had given birth to a son named Bharata, who was an ancestor of the lineages of the Kauravas and Pandavas.
