डिफ्थीरिया को गलघोंटू नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह कॉरीनेबैक्टेरियम डिफ्थीरिया बैक्टीरिया के इंफेक्शन से होता है। इसके बैक्‍टीरिया टांसिल व श्वास नली को संक्रमित करता है। संक्रमण के कारण एक ऐसी झिल्ली बन जाती है, जिसके कारण सांस लेने में रुकावट पैदा होती है और कुछ मामलों में तो मौत भी हो जाती है। यह बीमारी बड़े लोगों की तुलना में बच्‍चों को अधिक होती है।
