Shots were fired and police used water cannons to disperse crowds on August 1 as anti-ZANU-PF protesters took to the streets of Harare to express their discontent at the party’s election triumph.

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation said ZANU-PF won two thirds of the parliamentary seats, beating rival party MDC Alliance.

Early results indicated ZANU-PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa was in the lead to win the presidential election.

The military was deployed as a response to the protests.

On July 31 Zimbabwe took to the polls for the first time since the removal of Robert Mugabe, also of the ZANU-PF party, as president in 2017. Mugabe had been president for 30 years after serving as prime minister for seven years.. Credit: eNCA via Storyful
