Clashes erupted between protesters demonstrating against social security reforms and supporters of the government in the capital of Nicaragua, Managua, on April 18, local papers reported.
Riot police were mobilized to respond to the clashes and traffic was diverted from roads where protesters were marching.
The protesters demonstrated against reforms to the pension system that see worker contributions increase, while reducing the payout of future pensions, a measure the president of the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security said was necessary to sustain the institution for 10 years, at which point further reforms would be necessary.
