The use of tear gas was reported as police dispersed protesters demanding the release of a local Shia Islam leader in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on April 16.

Local media reported that the group were protesting the continued incarceration of their leader, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakyzaky, at Maitama, when armed police fired tear gas to disperse them. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
