দীর্ঘ বিরতির পর আবারো যৌথ সামরিক মহড়া শুরুর ঘোষণা দিয়েছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র এবং দক্ষিণ কোরিয়া। আগামী পহেলা এপ্রিল থেকে এ মহড়া শুরু হবে বলে জানিয়েছে দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার জাতীয় প্রতিরক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়। মঙ্গলবারের এ ঘোষণার পর এখন পর্যন্ত কোনো প্রতিক্রিয়া জানায়নি উত্তর কোরিয়া। এদিকে, পিয়ংইয়ং-এর ওপর চাপ অব্যাহত রাখার পাশাপাশি সঙ্কট সমাধানে সমঝোতার চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাওয়ার আহ্বান জানিয়েছে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়ন।

শীতকালীন অলিম্পিক উপলক্ষে কোরীয় উপদ্বীপে সামরিক মহড়া স্থগিত করায় দুই কোরিয়ার সম্পর্কে বরফ গলতে শুরু করে। সেইসঙ্গে উত্তর কোরীয় নেতা ও মার্কিন প্রেসিডেন্টের মধ্যে ঐতিহাসিক এক বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠানের সম্ভাবনা যাগে।

এমন অবস্থার মধ্যেই আবারও সিউল-ওয়াশিংটন যৌথ সামরিক মহড়া শুরুর ঘোষণা এলো। এক বিবৃবিতে পেন্টাগন জানায়, পহেলা এপ্রিল থেকে শুরু হতে হওয়া যৌথ সামরিক মহড়া মে মাসের শেষ পর্যন্ত চলবে। মহড়ার বিষয়টি জাতিসংঘকে অবহিত করা হয়েছে বলেও জানানো হয়। যৌথ এ সামরিক মহড়া পূর্ব পরিকল্পিত এবং এটি কাউকে উস্কানি দেয়ার জন্য নয় বলে দাবি করে দক্ষিণ কোরিয়া।
