Post the reforms initiated in 1991, the government adopted open-sky policy that allowed private operators to operate air transport services in India. A clutch of private entrepreneurs seized the opportunity and took to the skies.

Among these, East West emerged as the first private airline to start operations in the domestic sector in 1992.
