Protests erupted in Lima, Peru, on December 25, following President Pedro Pablo Kuczynsk’s decision to pardon former leader Alberto Fujimori on health grounds the previous day.

The president had promised during his election campaign not to pardon the former strongman leader, who remains a deeply divisive figure within Peru for his handling of the country’s economic crisis in the 1990s and conflict with left-wing insurgents.

Fujimori was imprisoned for human rights and graft crimes that occurred under his rule from 1990 to 2000. His daughter, Keiko, came a close second to Kuczynsk in Peru’s 2016 presidential election. Credit: Twitter/RayRayAfrika via Storyful
