Over 250 people were rescued from the waters between the Philippines’ Polillo Island and the northeastern coast of Quezon province on December 21 after the Mercraft 3 ferry capsized, killing at least five people.

According to Filipino newspaper Inquirer.net, strong waves smashed into the ferry and caused it to tip over shortly after leaving the port of nearby town Real for Polillo Island.

Coast guard and fishermen ships worked together to save passengers who were knocked off board and left floating in the water, and as of December 22, Rappler reported that at least 252 people had been saved.
