ಭಾರತದ ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಕೇವಲ

ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಾಟ್ ಪರ್ವತ ಶ್ರೇಣಿಗಳ ಪೆರಿಯಾರ್ ಟೈಗರ್ ರಿಸರ್ವ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿರುವ
ಯಾತ್ರಾ ಕೆಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಕೂಡ ಅಪಾರ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ
ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ಷ ಸುಮಾರು 45 ರಿಂದ 50 ಮಿಲಿಯನ್ ಭಕ್ತರು
ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಅಂದಾಜು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ವಿಸ್ಮಯ ನಡೆಯುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಯೇ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಅದೇನೆಂದರೆ "ಮಕರ ಜ್ಯೋತಿ". ಈ ವಿಸ್ಮಯವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಲು ದೇಶ-ವಿದೇಶಗಳಿಂದ ಭಕ್ತರು ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿ ಪುನೀತರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಮಕರ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾದ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳಿವೆ. ಒಬ್ಬರು ಇದು ವಿಸ್ಮಯ ಎಂದರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವರು ಇದೆಲ್ಲಾ ಮೋಸ ಎಂದೂ ವಾದಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರವನ್ನು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಕಮಿಟಿಯವರು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ
