SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS — A church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas on Sunday has left 26 people dead and 20 wounded, authorities said.
The shooter was a white male dressed in all-black tactical gear and a ballistic vest, according to CNN. He has been identified as Devin Kelley of New Braunfels, ABC New reported.
Kelly entered the First Baptist Church and opened fire with a Ruger AR rifle around 11:20 a.m. before fleeing the scene in an SUV, said Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt, according to KSAT.
As Kelly was attempting to leave, a local resident used a rifle to engage him. The shooter then fled the church, according to CNN.
After a short car chase, authorities found the suspected shooter dead from a gunshot wound inside his truck. Officials are still trying to determine Kelly's cause of death.
