Chelsea Clinton tweeted her dismay over President Trump’s recent decision to bar transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. Military.
The former first daughter wrote on Wednesday, “...President Trump has consistently failed to support LGBT equal rights, dignity & safety in the U.S. & around world (e.g. Chechnya/Russia)” and included a link to a Washington Post analysis of Trump’s ever-changing “stance on LGBT rights.”
The Post piece points out that Trump has offered markedly divergent views on the matter over the years.
While he has, in recent times, pledged to be a champion for the LGBT community, the Post’s analysis notes, “that the Trump administration has rolled back protections for transgender Americans.”
The latest reversal came on Wednesday morning when the president said in a series of tweets, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”
Trump’s statement came just weeks after the Pentagon said it would be giving the matter 6 months of consideration.
