Police in Moscow arrested several hundred people at an anti-corruption protest in the city on July 12, Russia’s national holiday. Large numbers of people were arrested at similar events in other cities too, including more than 100 in St Petersburg.

Some 200 people were held in the capital, Reuters said, but some local reports put the figure at much higher.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was reported to have been arrested en route to a demonstration in Moscow. Navalny had called the previous day for protesters in Moscow to defy authorities and move a planned rally to a location near the Kremlin.

This footage shows armored police and protesters on the streets of Moscow.
