The West Mims wildfire on the Georgia-Florida border grew to 148,066 acres overnight and was 15 percent contained on Friday, May 12. Evacuation orders remained in effect for those who had a St. George or Moniac address.
“Residents are asked to take the evacuation order seriously and leave, particularly those in the St. George to ‘Georgia Bend’ to Moniac area south of Highway 94,” officials said in the morning update.
Weather conditions on Friday also were favorable for extreme fire behavior, and officials said rainfall predicted for Saturday would be too light to affect the fire.
