West Mims Wildfire Crosses Highway

The West Mims Wildfire grew to more than 140,000 acres on Tuesday, May 9. The fire in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is 12 percent contained.

Evacuation orders were in place for the southern end of Charlton County, according to the incident report, and a number of highways were closed.

The smoke from the fire could be seen as far south as Jacksonville, Florida, and officials had issued a smoke alert for the area. Nearly 700 firefighters from across the southeast are battling the wildfire.

Conner Edwards, who took this footage and is a Charlton County firefighter, said on Facebook this footage was taken as the fire crossed Highway 94.
