Residents Say Police Projectiles Ignited Caracas Apartment Building

Residents of an apartment building in the municipality of El Paraiso in Caracas, Venezuela, said that tear gas bombs thrown by police from the street caused the building and several vehicles to catch fire on May 2.

The uploader of these videos said dozens of apartment windows were broken, two apartments caught fire and three cars were burned out. According to the uploader, police forces threw projectiles at firefighters while they were responding to the blaze.

The ongoing protests against President Nicholas Maduro have been violently suppressed by the National Guard and police, with more than 25 people killed since the demonstrations began in late March. Activists and opposition leaders say that Maduro’s deployment of the National Police and National Guard violates their constitutional right to peaceful protest.
