LONDON, August 31
Alejandro ZARZUELA BELTRAN (ESP) and Ismael GARCIA MORENO (ESP) combined for 46 points as Spain beat South Africa 74-50 to stay unbeaten in preliminary round group A wheelchair basketball match.
The African champions could not resist the offensive firepower of the Spaniards, who shot 61 per cent in the first half and barely eased off as they breezed as much as 29 points clear.
GARCIA MORENO had 16 of his 22 points as Spain built a 41-24 advantage at half-time after earlier pulling away with an 8-0 run.
Then ZARZUELA BELTRAN stepped up his support, with 12 of his game-best tally of 24 coming after the break as his side continued to pull away.
GARCIA MORENO increased the gap to 62-33 with the opening score of the fourth quarter. Although the South Africans reeled off a 9-0 burst, their second defeat of the tournament was already certain. Top scorers for South Africa were Richard NORTE and Stuart JELLOWS with 11 points each.
