Protesters carrying banners commemorating the loss of life on Istanbul’s Taksim Square on May Day in 1977 were dispersed by police in riot gear on May 1.
This video shows marchers scatter as police fire non-lethal rounds at the ground at their feet. Later a man is seen being detained on the ground and police can be seen firing tear gas.
Police reportedly broke up marches around the city, with a number of people being detained.
May Day, marked internationally as a day of protest for workers’ rights, is also remembered in Turkey as the day at least 34 people died when nationalists opened fire on a demonstration on Taksim Square in 1977.
