Romania is a place where more than 2,000 girls under 16 are mothers. Some mothers are as young as 12. Romania is home to the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Europe. Fifteen percent of children in Romania are born to teenage mothers, many of whom are forced to drop out of school. The Romanian Institute of Statistics says that around 18,600 teenagers gave birth in 2014 including 2,212 aged between 12 and 15 years. More than two-thirds of whom live in rural areas.
