SERENA WILLIAMS PREGNANCY PAVES WAY FOR WOMEN
SERENA Williams’ surprise revelation she was pregnant when she won this year’s Australian Open has been hailed a victory for females wanting a family and an elite sporting career.
Williams on Thursday shocked the world by revealing she was pregnant when crowned Melbourne Park queen a record seventh time in January and would take time out of the game to have her baby.
Australian Open chiefs confirmed they had no idea the US ace, 35, was carrying a child when she claimed her 23rd Grand Slam title but it was last night unclear if Williams knew at the time.

Experts said she could reach even greater heights after child birth with research suggesting woman can experience improved athletic ability after having a baby.
Among well wishes and widespread awe at her achievement, Australian Open director Craig Tiley predicted Williams would continue her brilliant career.
“We all hope to see her come back to win her eighth Australian Open title,’’ he said. “Given her success here and knowing how much Serena loves Australia, we are all looking forward to welcoming the baby to Melbourne Park.”
Adding another chapter to her proud history in Melbourne, Williams’ would have been about eight weeks pregnant when she braved summer heat and the world’s best to win the Australian Open.
Health professionals said she could have been battling morning sickness or nausea at that stage of the pregnancy or even experienced a boost in red blood cells that could have helped her on court. Collingwood AFLW player Kate Sheahan said Williams may not have even known she was pregnant.
“I was still hitting tennis balls and swimming up until the day before I was due,’’ she said.

Sheahan returned to work as a tennis coach three days after giving birth to son Will, 6. She knew she was pregnant at six weeks but did not feel any symptoms until 12 weeks.
“It makes me feel like Serena is more human, like she is just like the rest of us wanting to settle down and start a family,” she said.
Williams’ fiance Alexis Ohanian was in the stands at Melbourne Park when won in January despite rarely venturing to her tournaments abroad.
