MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA — A California-based startup has designed a powered suit that can provide extra muscle strength for elderly people and increase their mobility.

Superflex’s Aura Powered suit is a smartsuit designed to be worn in direct contact with the body. It contains hexagonal pods that house batteries, control boards and elastic muscle technology.

The technology was originally developed at robotics lab SRI International under a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grant to reduce injuries in soldiers carrying heavy loads. SRI patented a smart material that behaves like human muscle, which expands when exposed to an electric current and contracts when the current is removed.

The Aura Powered suit is configured to be aligned with the body’s natural muscular movements, and provides extra power by the mechanical motion of the smart material. Thus, it can provide support for the user when sitting down and add muscle power when getting up.

The suit has a tentative release date of mid-2018.
