EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA — Police near San Diego are under fire for shooting dead 30-year-old Alfred Olango, an African-American man in the parking lot of the Broadway Village shopping center.
On September 27, Alfred Olango’s sister contacted police saying he was mentally ill, and was acting strangely. Shortly after, El Cajon police officers arrived on scene. Witnesses say roughly 20 or so were present to tend to the situation at hand.
It was then that officers claim Olango pulled an item from his front pants pocket and got into a shooting stance, and aimed at the cops. Feeling threatened, one of the officers discharged a stun gun, while another officer fired five bullets at Olango. The item Olango drew from his pants has been revealed to have been a vape smoking device.
Olango’s sister was filmed by bystanders in the parking lot, screaming at police for killing her brother after she called them in to help him. Alfred Olango was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Protests are taking place to mourn another black man’s death at the hands of police. According to the website Mapping Police Violence, 217 blacks have been killed at the hands of police in 2016.
