This marks the first such top spot appearance for a U.S. locale, notes The Post and Courier.
Charleston’s award-worthy qualities and features include its coastal placement, affable residents, and historic buildings.
Travel + Leisure’s editor, Nathan Lump, also gave a nod to the, “creative culture that is making it one of the most notable destinations for those who seek out interesting restaurants, bars and shops that highlight a dedication to distinctive craft.”
Charleston was named the number 1 city in the U.S. and Canada as well, a distinction it has now been given 4 times in a row, reports WCBD.
The world's other 2016 top spots include Chiang Mai, Thailand; San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and Florence, Italy.
