Question usually asked

We upgraded to Quickbooks Pro 2003. We did this in order
to use the Multi-User Mode. Our Company file is
about 79 Meg. We are running on high end Pentium 4's.
The data is on a Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ machine with 1gig of ram.
The problem is that when we go into Multi-User mode it takes
any ID other than admin over 5 minutes to open the company file.
We thought it might be our network so we took the data to another network and ran into the same problem. We have turned off audit trails but this did not help. Looking for any advice. We our at our wits end and looking for alternative packages

Answer

Can only suggest the usual speed-things-up strategies:

Maximise memory on each PC using QB - not just the one storing the data.

Put the QB company file on your fastest PC - pay attention to the speed of the hard drive and of the memory - not just the processor. Even some very good new PCs are supplied with hard drives and memory which are not as fast as the motherboard will take, but the upgrade should not be too expensive.

Make sure you have the right size paging files on each PC, preferably on separate drives to the software & data.

Defrag all drives regularly.

Use 'Map network drive' from the other PCs to access the folder where you have your company file.

Could you archive & compress previous years' data to slim the company file down?
