Over 250,000 people of Haitian origin are now stateless. According to a change in the law of the neighboring Dominican Republic, children born there of undocumented foreigners lose Dominican citizenship. The deadline for registering or facing deportation was last June 17. The two nations share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, and Haiti is the poorer of the two. Many Haitians are now living in squatter camps in deplorable conditions. teleSUR
