Women in Religion: Contesting Perception, a panel discussion held after the screening of Norhayati Kaprawi's documentary, Ulama Perempuan, centred on the rights of women in religion. The underlying question: how is it that even though women are protected in religion, the reality is quite different.

The panelists were:

(1) Marina Mahathir, Social Activist
(2) Ustaz Wan Ji Wan Hussin, Independent Preacher
(3) Firdaus Husni, Chairperson, Bar Council Constitutional Law
Committee
(4) Norhayati Kaprawi, Documentary Filmmaker and
(5) Sister Barbara Yen, Buddhist Maha Vihara

Norhayati's film, Ulama Perempuan features a movement towards the acceptance of women as Ulama or religious scholars, unheard of in Muslim communities.

But Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation has an experience with religion that is unique in its humanistic approach to Islam and this is reflected in the way religious officials of Jakarta's Istiqlal Mosque attends to the jemaah (congregation) in Norhayati's film.

Also screened was Norhayati's animation on Monogamy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjOKAPy38FU
