With Turkey stuck in political stalemate, the country’s prime minister says he would prefer to see an election held “as soon as possible.”

It comes after talks between Ahmet Davutoglu’s ruling AK Party and the opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, ended without a deal.

“For the stability of everyone, after all the efforts invested, the probability of early elections is increasing. Maybe it is the only solution,” said Davutoglu.

“As political leaders and representatives of the assembly, we have until the 23rd of August to fix this situation. After that, the president will have to act.”

The AKP failed to win a parliamentary majority in June’s elections, leaving it unable to govern alone for the first time since coming to power in 2002.

It is now expected to hold talks with the nationalist opposition MHP party, which could secure an interim government agreement.
