Guatemalan justice officials have begun the retrial of ex dictator Efraim Rios Montt. In May 2013, Rios Montt was found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity for killing 1,771 people and committing thousands of human rights abuses in his 1980s dictatorship, but the historic verdict and accompanying 80-year prison sentence were overturned and the ex dictator declared mentally unfit to face trial. The trial so far has been marred by “technical difficulties” but Rios Montt may be required to appear in court. teleSUR
