Important Issues After Your Bellevue Divorce (Part 2) - Bellevue Family Law Attorney, Amanda DuBois.

So we've covered most of the financial issues that evolve from your Bellevue divorce court order. Some we didn't talk about, for instance, if you are required to sell your home, that is something you must do as soon as possible. There may be other special financial requirements of your Bellevue Divorce that you have to deal with also. For instance, are there any retirement account or pension plan transfers? These can be done tax free in a divorce - it's called a “qualified domestic relations order" and allows those assets to transfer to another retirement account in your name tax free - until you take it out or begin drawing on it.

How about other things?

Well, how about a name change. At this time, you are free to do that. You can take back your maiden name, or you can choose an entirely new name and change it. However, if you do change your name, you are going to need to notify all financial institutions where you have an account, as well as the Social Security office. Social Security tracks everything by a number and name, so you want to make sure your name change is reflected with your identifying number.

A great way to run a check to make sure you've caught everything is order a credit report on yourself. This will show what cards are still in your name or your spouse's name, or if there are old cards neither of you use anymore that are still reflected, and allows you to make sure everything is cleaned up on your credit report but also on the transferring of assets.

Some cautionary words. Relocating a child. Remember, you have a child custody order issued by the court that dictates child custody. Do not move and take your child without the court's permission and your ex spouse's knowledge. You must get the court's permission for any move that takes the child out of your county, your state, or in some cases, even their school district. Do not overlook this fact.

So be careful — follow all of your court orders, understand exactly what’s expected of you, get all your assets transferred, do everything –get a credit check, get your credit report, make sure there aren’t extraneous credit cards out there — find out what your rights are for relocation. And once you have this great understanding of how the laws work in your state, now you can go forward with your whole new life and have everything work out for you really great — hopefully — in the future after your Bellevue divorce.
