A caravan of Yaqui indigenous people has arrived in Mexico City as part of their fight to stop an aqueduct from draining their resources. After a 12-day trek across 23 states along 3 separate routes, the National Caravan in Defense of Water, Territory, Work and Life has reached its final destination. They are calling for the dismantling of the Independence Aqueduct in the state of Sonora, which has dried up the Yaqui River, upon which the tribe depends for its survival. Despite having won major court battles, the Sonoran government continues to ignore Supreme Court edicts as the pipeline pumps 6o million cubic meters of water per year from the community. A historic mass rally is scheduled to be held in the Mexico City Zócalo this Thursday afternoon as a show of force by social movements against megaprojects that threaten the country’s most basic resources. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City for teleSUR.
