In Sonora, rights groups have organized a nationwide caravan to defend the rights to water, territory and self-determination. The initiative is spearheaded by the Yaqui indigenous people, who have become a symbol of resistance against the privatization of natural resources. The tribe regularly blocks the highway leading to the United States as part of their fight against a state-sponsored aqueduct that is leaving eight communities dry. Two years ago Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of the tribe, suspending the project that pumps water out of the Yaqui River, yet Sonora state authorities have ignored the order and refused to consult with tribal authorities. The river has now almost dried up and is highly contaminated. The Yaqui struggle has come to symbolize the right to water of all people, as well as their right to territory and self-determination.
