Many donation bins are cleverly designed to prevent theft, but that hasn't stopped people from trying.
On Tuesday, May 14, a man in Michigan died on May 14 after becoming stuck in a donation bin.
Donation bins generally have anti-theft features. One type uses a 45 degree upward slope. Items are pushed up and then fall down into the bin.
Another design uses a bucket-like curved receptacle allowing items to be put into the bin but not removed.
Authorities say the 53-year-old unidentified man from Lansing Michigan, attempted to force his way into the chute but became stuck.
The man apparently attempted to free himself, but he was choked by his own arm as he struggled.
Lansing police say they are currently not treating the case as suspicious.
Becoming stuck in donation boxes is a too-frequent occurrence. In July 2013 a woman had to be rescued from a bin in Oklahoma while a New Jersey man died in a donation bin in December.
