A shooting in New Orleans early on Sunday morning led to a three-hour standoff between a New Orleans Police SWAT team and the gunman and ended with one person dead and another man injured.
According to local reports, the incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday. Police told Fox8Live that four men from Louisiana’s Lafayette area — a 20-year-old, a 23-year-old, a 24-year-old, and a 25-year-old — were staying in a room on the 17th floor of The Westin New Orleans Canal Place. The names of the four men have not been released until next-of-kin can be contacted.
The 23-year-old man had already gone to sleep when his three friends returned to their shared hotel room at around 5 a.m. on Sunday. Shortly thereafter, he and the 25-year-old were awakened by the sound of the other two men arguing. The two men saw their 20-year-old friend sitting on the other bed, pointing a gun at the 24-year-old. The 24-year-old repeatedly told the 20-year-old, who appeared dazed and under the influence of an unnamed substance, to “put the gun down”. The 20-year-old then shot the 24-year-old in the chest.
The 23-year-old and his friend left the room to alert hotel staff. Police arrived shortly afterward and entered the room but were held at gunpoint by the 20-year-old before leaving the room again.
A SWAT team was then summoned and negotiated with the armed man by phone for three hours before forcing entry after another gunshot was heard.
Inside they discovered the 24-year-old alive but suffering from a gunshot wound, and the 20-year-old dead with an apparently a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 24-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital.
