Rescue teams worked through the night to rescue almost 500 people who were aboard a ferry that caught fire on the Adriatic Sea on Sunday. At least one man was reportedly killed trying to escape the blaze by jumping off the vessel and into the ocean.

Officials believe that the fire may have started in the parking bay of the Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic. One truck driver told Greek news media that trucks carrying olive oil were were “packed like sardines” in the parking bay, with cargo stacked to the ceiling.

Bad weather hampered rescue efforts overnight. As of Monday afternoon, multiple reports stated that more than 200 passengers have been rescued from the vessel.

Passengers told of waiting in freezing temperatures while the decks above the fire became so hot that shoes began to melt. Those who have been rescued have been flown to the port of Brindisi in Italy or to various hospitals.

The Norman Atlantic is set to be towed to Brindisi after rescue efforts are complete.
