A report by the Norwegian NGO Internal Displacement Monitoring Center released earlier this week puts the figure for Mexico at over 280,000. The vast majority of displaced Mexicans fled their homes to avoid political and drug-related violence. The report says most cases correspond to drug-related violence but that government intimidation and corruption play a role, and that the prevailing climate of impunity fuels further human rights abuses, which, in turn, also drives people from their localities. Many feel that Mexican authorities have failed to recognize the extent of the problem or take the necessary measures to address it. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
