The Occupy Central movement could be slowing down as the number of protesters dwindled to roughly 100 hardcore activists who slept overnight outside government buildings in the territory’s Central district.
The BBC reports that just 10 people remained camped in front of Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying’s office as of Monday afternoon. Some barricades were removed to allow government officials to enter their offices and go to work on Monday morning.
One unnamed newspaper vendor told Reuters that powerful business interests and the government were colluding against the Occupy movement. He said Hong Kong people were being fed lies in a deliberate attempt to dampen support for the protests.
About 200 protesters could be seen in Hong Kong’s working class district of Mong Kok, the site of clashes between gangsters and students several days ago. On Sunday and through the daylight hours of Monday, there were no reported incidents of violence, and while police were present at all protest sites, the officers were regular, unarmed uniformed cops rather than riot police.
As an eerie peace settled across much of Hong Kong on Monday, Alex Chow, secretary general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, told the media that while many had indeed gone home to rest, the thinning of the protesters should not be interpreted as an end to the movement. It remains to be seen if Chow’s predictions will come true as the sun goes down on Monday night.
One student protester who did not offer his name said the government held all the cards in this fight, but he echoed Alex Chow, saying he and his fellow protesters would keep the movement alive until the government finally compromises.
