A former high-ranking Hong Kong police officer briefed Next Media on possible tactics police in the city may use to clear pro-democracy protest sites in Admiralty, where protesters have blocked the major roads near the government headquarters for more than a month.

According to the former police officer, the first step would be cordoning off the protest area in Admiralty with 1,000 police officers.

Separately, groups of police officers would board MTR trains from different stations after the system has closed for the night to avoid attracting attention.

About 3,000 police officers would then exit at the Admiralty MTR station through different exits and swiftly converge on the protesters sometime between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Police would press the protesters on the ground, tie their hands and feet, and arrest them.

It has been rumoured that the Hong Kong Police Force will clear pro-democracy protest sites with more force, possibly as early as Wednesday, after the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit ends in Beijing on Tuesday.

Hong Kong’s acting chief executive on Tuesday warned students to clear protest areas or face arrest.

“To those who are unlawfully occupying the roads, we call for you to leave the areas quickly and peacefully,” said Carrie Lam, who is acting chief executive while Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying attends the APEC summit.
