When Saginaw, Michigan police got away with shooting dead a mentally ill man in broad daylight in 2012, there was a public outcry.

Now, the American Civil Liberties Union has obtained police dashcam footage showing in stark detail the last moments of 49-year-old Milton Hall's life, and it’s not for the faint-hearted. The audio was recorded separately by a bystander and was paired with the police video to give a fuller picture.

Hall, who was homeless and had a history of mental illness stretching back to his 20s, had been armed only with a small knife and was a good distance from the nearest of the eight officers who fired more than 45 rounds into him.

A Department of Justice investigation concluded in February that the officers involved were not guilty of willful misconduct. None of them will face face federal charges.

The video, which the ACLU secured via the Hall family’s lawyers, is being used to pressure the federal government to look again at Hall’s death.
