A medical device, dubbed Pea Pod, has been developed to help premature babies grow faster, thus cutting time in the neonatal intensive care unit, according to a Fox News report.
The Pea Pod is a medical device that uses air displacement technology to measure the body composition of premature infants.
The baby is first weighed by the device’s scale before being placed in an enclosed heated chamber for approximately two minutes where its body volume is measured by the amount of air displaced by its body inside the chamber, according to COSMED, the developer of the device.
By calculating the baby’s weight versus its volume, the Pea Pod can determine the percentage of the baby’s fat versus body mass.
Hospital staff can use the body composition data to design suitable nutritional supplements for the baby, according to Fox News.
