Researchers created an artificial womb in hopes of improving care for premature babies in the future. While the device has only been tested on fetal lambs, research found that the animals develop normally in the "womb" for about a month. The womb-like device is a clear plastic bag filled with synthetic amniotic fluid. A machine, which functions like a placenta, is attached to the umbilical cord to provide nutrition and oxygen to the blood while removing carbon dioxide.
