One person was killed when a plane crashed into a TV tower in West Texas on Wednesday night, local NBC affiliate KCBD NewsChannel 11 reported.

The single-engine Piper PA-46 aircraft departed from Carlsbad, New Mexico’s Cavern City Air Terminal around 6:40 p.m. and crashed around 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time while it was approaching Preston Smith International Airport in Lubbock, Texas.

The plane crashed into KCBD TV station’s transmission tower before landing in a field directly north of KCBD’s studio. The TV tower collapsed, and power was cut off to the studio and the surrounding area.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, died in the crash. He has been identified as Kenneth Mike Rice, a doctor of internal medicine in Lubbock.
