Five people and a dog were killed when a single-engine aircraft crashed near an airport north of Denver on Sunday.
The Piper PA-46 was traveling from Centennial Airport and was about to land at Erie Municipal Airport just before noon.

“We heard it sputtering,” witness Jan Culver told the Daily Camera. “Then there was no sound. We knew it crashed.”

The aircraft flipped and landed on its top. Reports said some badly wounded passengers exited the plane before paramedics arrived.

Three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Two were rushed to hospital but died later.

The last fatal accident at Erie Municipal Airport took place in 2011 when a plane crashed after its 64-year-old pilot had a heart attack.
