Shocking footage from a police cruiser's dashcam has landed an Alabama cop in some serious hot water. A 57-year-old Indian national named Sureshbhai Patel has sued the city and two officers in a civil rights complaint, alleging race factored into his treatment.

Patel moved from India to Alabama about two weeks ago to help his son's family care for their 17-month-old child.

On February 9 Patel was walking on the sidewalk outside his son's home around 9 a.m. when police said they received a call about a suspicious person who reportedly was looking into garages, according to a call to Madison Police describing him as "a skinny black guy with a toboggan [sic] on his head."

Needless to say, with that kind of a description to go on, it turned out exactly how you'd expect it to, complete with the police officers using unjustifiable extreme force and questionable documentation skills to cover it up.

The real news here though is how Officer Eric Parker's takedown on Patel to the ground partially paralyzed him. He's since regained partial use of his limbs except for his right leg, but the road to total recovery is unclear at this point. Just as the use of an illegal chokehold killed Eric Garner in New York City, this will be analyzed and scrutinized closely in the coming weeks.

Patel doesn't speak any English. But it never once occurred to any of the police officers that perhaps he lived in the neighborhood. Because obviously, no people of color live in that area. Even though his son, daughter-in-law, grandchild and now he himself live a few doors down from where this all took place.

The situations is now an international incident, with the State Department belting out apologies.

Madison Police Chief Larry Munsey formally charged Officer Eric Parker with one count of third degree assault and is also is recommending his termination. Parker is already on administrative leave while an internal investigation is being done.
