Police in New Zealand used a rock to smash open the window of a car sinking into the water at a wharf in Auckland Tuesday, pulling out a trapped motorist who was moments away from possibly drowning.

Constables Paul Watts and Simon Russell were called to Fisherman’s Wharf at Northcote Point around 3:15 p.m. when a BMW rolled into the water.

When they arrived on scene, a 63-year-old woman was in the BMW about three-quarters submerged in the water.

Two members of the public were desperately trying to hold to car up on the bank.

The woman became distraught and climbed into the back seat towards the only available air pocket left.

Officer Russell first tried to break the window with his baton, but failed. While Russell reached down into the water to look for a rock, he cut his hand.

Officer Watts was able to smash the back window open with a rock. The two officers then rescued the woman from the car.

The woman was taken to the North Shore Hospital. Luckily she did not suffer any injuries and was in stable condition.
