After the deadly Paris attacks, what can be done to prevent people from turning to terrorism? Pierre Conesa is a former senior French Defence Ministry official and the author of a recent report on methods to counter radicalism. He gives us his point of view.
Pierre Conesa says that a key issue is what happens to prisoners after they leave jail and are no longer under surveillance. He also questions the organisation of the secular French state, where the officials who deal with religious authorities are part of the interior ministry. This means that imams are wrongly perceived by extremists as working with the police. He concludes by saying that in France, "we have to rethink our conception of secularism".
