The third and final installment of the original Donkey Kong trilogy came to the NES three years after its debut in arcades. Donkey Kong 3 was a major departure from the first two games in the series, featuring a new protagonist and completely new gameplay. Not a true platformer, Donkey Kong 3 is actually a shooter—the game has more in common with Space Invaders than the two previous Donkey Kong games. Players take the role of Stanley, an exterminator tasked with removing Donkey Kong from a greenhouse. A strange title in DK’s history, Donkey Kong 3 would be also be his last game until Rare revived the series more than a decade later. Donkey Kong 3 features single-player and local multiplayer play on the NES.
