Miraculously, an elderly couple is still alive after an aircraft crashed into their home. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, the Aero Commander 500 struck the front of their Chicago residence.
The front end of the plane plowed nose first through the ground floor and into the basement. About a third of the wreckage including the tail could be seen sticking up outside the home.
The couple, identified as Roberta and Ray, have lived in the house for 55 years.
According to Michael Fox from the City of Chicago Fire Department, they were in the bedroom when the plane came crashing into their living room. The pair was approximately 8 inches away from the downed aircraft and they managed to escape unharmed.
The pair’s son Rick commented “They’re okay. She’s a little confused right now. All the neighbors have been real nice to us. We’re just trying to get all the valuables out, and clothes, and get organized, and see where we’ve got to go from here.”
The pilot, however, wasn’t nearly as fortunate. He passed away as a result of the crash.
Shortly after takeoff, he had reported engine troubles. He was en route back to the airport when the plane went down.
