Walking the dog
through autumn's first mist
I noticed
five strangers
at the bus stop
A young female
in school uniform
awkwardly
studying her shoes
Three skinny youths
staring purposefully
and separately
straight ahead
And an elderly man
bespectacled and brief-cased
peering myopically up the road
As I passed this group of silent commuters
five pairs of eyes averted their gaze
And without warning
a local kookaburra
laughed uproariously...
